Major Reasons Why You Find Your Computer Running Slow
Is your computer running slow for no apparent reason? Has it gradually started to slow down over recent days? There are six main causes which cover the majority of performance problems you might experience. This post takes a look at what these faults are and the types of solutions you can easily attempt for yourself.
- Your applications need updating. Many third-party applications will benefit from being updated due to the improvements in DLL files, drivers and application code that will be installed. Use Windows update to get the latest operating system and device drivers. Check third-party manufacturer websites for upgrades.
- Your running out of free space on the hard drive. This is a common fault that can occur when you’re copying too many files onto hard drives. Once it goes over 95% full then virtual memory will strain to perform correctly. This results in massive performance issues. Clear out old files and remove applications to gain back some space.
- You may have a virus on the PC. Adware, malware or viruses can result in poor startup times, slow internet connections, etc. especially if they’re running in the background constantly. Scan for bugs and remove them using good quality anti-virus applications.
- Your hard disk drive is too fragmented. Running the Disk Defragmenter every few weeks will help reduce the amount of file fragments on your system. This aids performance by improving disk access times.
- You need to close down some programs. All applications that you have running in the foreground or background all use RAM and CPU. Closing some of these down to free up some resources and help overall performance especially when you notice your computer running slow with specific applications open.
- Your registry file has been corrupted. This happens when applications are installed, removed or viruses damage registry key settings. Repair the faults in isolation by using a registry cleaner. The other option is to use System Restore from Windows to rollback any recent changes.
